Alexander Albon started P15, spent the afternoon nine-tenths slower in the middle sector — the longest section of the circuit — and still finished fifth. The last time a Williams beat a race-winning McLaren on a Sunday afternoon was Hungary 2023, when Logan Sargeant scraped ninth and Lando Norris retired. This was not that. This was something stranger.

Let's establish what didn't happen here: Albon did not drive a brilliant qualifying lap ruined by grid penalties. He did not benefit from a first-lap collision ahead. He did not inherit position through pit stop chaos or team orders. He started P15 in a Williams — a car that, on pure pace, had no business finishing in the points — and drove a race that required him to be faster than exactly zero people in Sector 2.

Because he wasn't. He was 0.9 seconds slower than Piastri through Turns 4–10, the twisting infield that makes up nearly half the lap. He was slower in Sector 1. He was slower in Sector 3. And yet, somehow, when the chequered flag fell, he was 10 positions higher than where he started.

The answer is written in the tyre data, and it looks like controlled desperation. Albon ran a three-stop race in a field where almost everyone else ran two. Medium to Lap 23, hard to Lap 53, then — and this is the gamble — soft tyres for the final 19 laps. Not because Williams thought the softs were faster. Because they thought chaos was coming, and when it did, they wanted to be the fastest car on track for exactly three or four laps. Just long enough.

They were right. Four safety car periods in the final 20 laps. Albon's soft tyres, which would have fallen off a cliff in clean air, never had to survive more than a handful of racing laps at a time. Meanwhile, Piastri — who stayed out on hards from Lap 24 to the flag — was managing a tyre that had 48 laps on it when the final safety car came out. Fresh softs vs. ancient hards is not a fair fight. And for those brief windows of green-flag running, it didn't matter that Albon was slow in Sector 2. He was faster than the people directly ahead of him.

There is a historical precedent for this, and it's instructive: Canada 2011. Jenson Button, lapped by Sebastian Vettel at one point, drove a race so chaotic that he stopped six times and still won. But Button had the fastest car that day — he just needed the safety cars to bunch the field and give him clean air to use it. Albon didn't have the fastest car. He had the freshest tyres at the right moments, which in a safety-car lottery is sometimes enough.

The difference is that Button's win felt like inspiration. Albon's fifth place feels like tactical brilliance married to a car that had no right being there. Williams looked at the weather forecast — dry, stable, no reason for chaos — and bet the opposite. They three-stopped a car that was 1.4 seconds slower on average lap time than the race winner. And it worked.

So what does this mean for Monza, a circuit where top speed decides the grid and slipstream decides the race? It means Williams might try this again — not because the car is fast, but because Albon has now proven he can turn safety car timing into track position even when the underlying pace isn't there. If Italy is another interrupted race, expect Williams to be aggressive with strategy. If it's clean, expect them to vanish.

Piastri won at Zandvoort because McLaren had the pace and the reliability and the strategy to control the race from the front. Albon finished fifth because Williams had none of those things and bet on entropy instead. The last time that worked for them was never. Which makes this the first time. Watch what they do with it.
