The data is brutal. Gasly pitted once on Lap 23, bolted on a set of hards, and rode them for 49 laps through four safety car restarts. Colapinto pitted three times — softs, hards, mediums, then softs again for the final sprint — and still beat him by over nine seconds and six positions.

This wasn't a close call. Colapinto's average lap time across the race was 2.2 seconds faster. In a 72-lap race with five safety cars that compressed the field, that gap is unforgivable. Gasly didn't lose this battle in the corners. He lost it in the strategy room, and he never recovered.

One driver adapted, one didn't

Here's what Gasly's engineers saw and ignored: the hard tyres weren't degrading — they were improving for the first 20 laps, gaining pace as they came in. Colapinto's hards showed the same pattern. That's the signal to run them long, yes. But when the third safety car came out on Lap 53, that was the window to switch strategy. Everyone around them did. Colapinto pitted. Gasly stayed out.

The result? Colapinto came out on mediums that were three seconds a lap faster than Gasly's worn hards during the Lap 54–65 stint. Then he pitted again under the Lap 65 safety car for softs and had fresh rubber for the final sprint. Gasly was a sitting duck on tyres that were 49 laps old, watching cars on 20-lap-old rubber sail past him.

The most damning part? Colapinto's final stint on softs averaged 89 seconds a lap — ten seconds slower than his earlier pace because the race ended under red flag conditions and he was managing a destroyed set of tyres. Even with that, he still finished ahead. Gasly's hards were so cooked by Lap 72 that he had a track limits violation at Turn 12 on the final tour. He couldn't keep the car on the circuit.

This was a race that rewarded aggression and punished conservatism. Bearman made one stop and gained 14 places. Albon made two and finished fifth from fifteenth. Stroll made two and went from nineteenth to seventh. The common thread? They all pitted under safety cars and took fresh tyres when the gaps were neutralised. Gasly sat on his hands and watched Alpine's best shot at points in months evaporate.

The narrative coming out of Zandvoort will be about Piastri's dominance, or Verstappen's recovery drive, or the McLaren reliability gremlins that took out Norris. Fine. But buried in P11 and P17 is the story Alpine doesn't want you to see: they had a car capable of points, and one driver maximised it while the other played it safe and fell off the cliff.

Monza is next. It's a track where tyre management matters less and top speed matters more. If Alpine wants to claw back into the points battle, they need to trust the data, not the gut. Colapinto proved that works. Gasly proved the opposite.
