Not over a race stint where tyre management and traffic come into play—over single flying laps where both drivers get clean air and fresh rubber. That's not a car differential. This is Verstappen's home race. The pressure is enormous, the crowd is watching, and McLaren just locked out the front row. Verstappen responds by qualifying on the podium. Tsunoda, in the same Red Bull that everyone claims "isn't competitive anymore," qualifies behind a Haas. Behind an Alpine. Behind both Racing Bulls cars that are supposed to be the junior team.

Here's what makes it worse: Tsunoda actually stopped one lap earlier than Verstappen in his final stint. He had fresher tyres for his qualifying simulation. He had every opportunity to close that gap. Instead, it grew. By the end of the session, Verstappen was pulling away at 0.68 seconds per lap on degrading softs.

The telemetry shows where Tsunoda loses it. His fastest lap came on Lap 11. Verstappen's came on Lap 17—six laps later, on older tyres, in hotter track conditions. That's not just confidence. That's a driver who understands how to extract pace from a difficult car when it matters most.

This isn't a new problem. But it's getting impossible to ignore. Red Bull promoted Tsunoda to the senior team to be Verstappen's wingman, to take points off rivals, to qualify in positions that make strategy flexible. He's doing none of those things. Starting P12 means he's in traffic all race. It means Red Bull can't split strategy with McLaren. It means Verstappen is out there alone.

The consensus narrative is that Red Bull's dominance is over because McLaren built a better car. Maybe. But Verstappen just outqualified Lando Norris's teammate in inferior machinery.
