The Ferrari was gone before the back straight even started. Norris never had a chance.

The rest of the circuit was competitive. Hamilton took five-hundredths in Sector 1, a quarter-second in Sector 3. Margins you'd expect between a front-runner and someone who started sixth.

But a full second in the middle sector is something else. That's not tyre management or traffic. That's a car advantage so large it doesn't matter what the driver does.

Shanghai's Sector 2 is about traction. The hairpin is second gear, maybe first. You need a car that squats over the rear axle and fires out clean. The Ferrari does. The McLaren doesn't.

Norris started P6 and finished P8. He didn't fall backward because he drove poorly. He fell backward because every car with Ferrari or Red Bull power walked past him in six seconds of track, lap after lap, and there was nothing he could do about it.

This wasn't close. Hamilton's average lap time across the sprint was 96.83 seconds. Norris's was 97.77. The difference is almost entirely that hairpin.

At Suzuka next week, the esses matter more than traction zones. If McLaren can't fix the slow-speed exit problem, they'll get another lesson. If they can, this might look different. But in China, the Ferrari was gone before Turn 8.
