Stroll Gained Ten Places. It Didn't Matter.

Lance Stroll drove the drive of his season at Silverstone and still finished a minute behind Lando Norris.

Lance Stroll started P17. He finished P7. Ten places gained in a wet Silverstone race that red-flagged after 52 laps.

Lando Norris beat him by a minute.

Stroll's race will show up in the weekend summaries as a strong recovery. He started near the back, survived the chaos, executed three pit stops, and brought the Aston Martin home seventh.

That summary is missing the only number that matters. Norris was 0.93 seconds faster in Sector 1. Every lap. For the entire race.

Sector 1 at Silverstone runs from Abbey through Farm and Village to The Loop. It is four corners. Norris was gaining a second through four corners.

By Sector 3 — the famous Maggotts-Becketts-Chapel sweep — Stroll had clawed back some time. He was only half a second down through the high-speed section. That is still half a second. The McLaren was 2.3 seconds faster per lap on average. Stroll could drive a perfect lap and finish a minute behind.

Stroll briefly led by seven tenths on Lap 7 when Norris pitted early. After Lap 11, the line only goes one direction.

Stroll's intermediates were working. His degradation rate from Lap 11 to Lap 41 was -0.649 seconds per lap — slower than Norris at -0.788, meaning the Aston was gentler on the tyres. He stayed out longer. He got a clear track. He made the strategy work.

He still lost a second per lap.

This is the problem Aston Martin takes to Spa. Stroll drove well. The car wasn't fast enough for it to matter.

Norris won from P3. Nico Hulkenberg finished third from P19. Stroll's ten-place gain was one of the least impressive results in the top ten. When the car is this far off the pace, recovery drives don't count for much.

At Spa, watch Sector 1 again. If Aston Martin can't fix whatever is bleeding time through the medium-speed corners, the result will look identical. Different circuit. Same gap.
