Lando Norris Stayed Out Too Long and Lost Spa From Pole

One extra lap on worn intermediates in changing conditions cost McLaren a race they controlled from the front.

Lando Norris started on pole in the wet at Spa and finished second to his teammate. Lewis Hamilton started eighteenth and finished seventh. The difference wasn't pace—it was reading when the track was ready for slicks.

Norris led the opening eleven laps on intermediates as the rain stopped and the track began to dry. The window to switch to slicks opened on Lap 12—and McLaren got the call right for one car. Piastri pitted from second place and bolted on mediums. Norris stayed out one more lap, inherited the lead briefly, then pitted for hards.

That compound choice suggests McLaren thought the track might go back wet. It didn't. The rain held off long enough for the medium runners to build an insurmountable gap, and when Norris rejoined on hards—a tyre that takes longer to switch on—he was already behind Piastri and never close enough to attack.

Hamilton, starting from the back of the grid, made the same Lap 11 call as half the field and went straight to mediums. He spent the rest of the race picking off cars that had either stayed out too long or chosen hards. The data shows his medium-tyre pace actually improved as the stint went on—negative degradation, meaning lap times got faster. That's the signature of a drying track with the right compound underneath you.

Norris, meanwhile, spent thirty laps on hards that were never quite in the window. His degradation was flatter, but flat pace on the wrong tyre is just controlled losing.

McLaren had the front row. They controlled the race in the wet. Then they split strategies between their two cars at the worst possible moment—and the conservative call lost. If Norris pits on Lap 12 with Piastri and takes mediums, this is a different race. Instead, he gave up track position, took a slower-warming compound, and spent the rest of the afternoon driving a lonely second.

At Hungary, watch for McLaren's weather decisions. Spa showed they can read conditions—but only for one car at a time.
