Kimi Antonelli Is Being Hung Out to Dry

Russell got six attempts to find the limit across three red flag interruptions. Antonelli got two stops — both in the first six laps — and then watched from the garage while his teammate kept refining. By the time the session ended, Russell had run 18 laps. Antonelli managed six before Mercedes parked him. You can't find a tenth when you're not on track.

And here's the part that stings: when Antonelli was running, he was competitive. His degradation through that opening stint was negative — he was getting faster, not slower, which is exactly what you want to see from a rookie learning a circuit in qualifying trim. Meanwhile Russell's tyres were falling off at over half a second per lap across his marathon 18-lap run.

Antonelli's average lap time was 116.2 seconds. Russell's was 114.3. That's the talent gap — less than two seconds over a lap and a half at Spa. The position gap was 12 places. That's the strategy gap.

You could argue Mercedes was protecting Antonelli from himself — saving tyres, avoiding track limits penalties in a session that saw Hamilton lose two lap times and Bortoleto get a deletion at Turn 10. But that's the problem. You don't learn the limit by staying inside it.

Russell's pace advantage came from volume, not genius. He had six opportunities to probe the track limits, refine his inputs, and respond to what the circuit was giving him. Antonelli had two runs, then sat in the garage watching everyone else evolve. By Lap 11, Russell was still circulating. Antonelli's session had been over for five laps.

Teams make choices. Mercedes chose to give their experienced driver the reps and their rookie a watching brief. You can justify it tactically — maybe they didn't want to burn another set, maybe they were worried about damage. But you can't then turn around and judge the drivers on the same scale.
