This was data gathering. Bahrain in race conditions with multiple red flags gave Williams something they desperately need: track time. So they sacrificed Sainz's grid position to learn about the car. Seven pit stops means seven opportunities to try setup tweaks, brake balance changes, aero configurations. Albon got the normal Saturday. Sainz got the engineering experiment.

You're comparing Albon's two fastest efforts to Sainz's average across thirteen extra laps, most of them on tyres well past their qualifying window. If Williams had run them both on the same program, this would've been a three-tenths battle, maybe less.

The real story is what Williams chose to prioritize. They brought a car to Bahrain that clearly needs answers. Albon's job was to extract the maximum on Saturday. Sainz's job was to help the engineers figure out what questions to ask.

When you see Williams in Saudi Arabia, don't watch the qualifying positions.
