A Lap 1 safety car handed Williams a free pit stop. Then Red Bull demonstrated exactly how you neutralize a gift you didn't get.

Alexander Albon started 19th. A Lap 1 safety car let him pit for free. He finished 13th, a full minute behind Max Verstappen.

That's not a story about bad luck. That's a story about why timing a gift matters less than what you do after you've received it.

The safety car lottery handed Albon a free stop under yellow on Lap 1. Williams bolted on mediums, and suddenly a driver who qualified 19th was running 13th with fresh rubber while half the field nursed tyres they'd started on.

It should have been a platform. Instead, Williams gave it back 14 laps later with a second stop onto hards — a reactive, panicked call that surrendered every second the safety car had gifted them. The medium stint averaged 108.9 seconds per lap and was haemorrhaging half a second per lap in degradation by the end. They blinked first.

Verstappen, meanwhile, ignored the chaos. Red Bull started him on hards from pole and left him out there for 40 laps. Not because the tyre was magic — it was losing six-hundredths per lap, which over 40 laps is real time — but because staying out longer than everyone else is how you neutralize a safety car you didn't benefit from.

By Lap 20, Albon's gap had evaporated. By Lap 30, Verstappen was pulling a second per lap on the Williams. When Red Bull finally pitted on Lap 40 for mediums, the race was already over.

That spike at Lap 15 is Albon's second stop. From there, Verstappen extends by a second every two laps until his own stop on Lap 40.

This is what elite strategy execution looks like: Red Bull turned a disadvantage into inevitability. Albon got the free stop. Verstappen got the faster car and a team that trusted the plan. Williams had to react twice. Red Bull reacted once, 39 laps after everyone else had committed.

Albon picked up six places and finished where the car probably belonged anyway. Verstappen won by over a minute. The safety car didn't decide this race. Patience did.

Singapore is next. It's a street circuit where safety cars matter even more than they did in Baku, and track position is everything. If Williams get another early gift, they'll need a better plan than "stop again 14 laps later."
