Antonelli Got Lucky. Mercedes Threw It Away Anyway.

A Lap 2 safety car gave Mercedes a gift podium. They turned it into P4 with two unnecessary stops.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli started 16th and finished fourth. The safety car on Lap 2 handed him 12 places. The team's decisions after that almost gave them all back.

Antonelli pitted on Lap 2 under the safety car. Everyone ahead of him stayed out. When the race restarted, he was running fifth on fresh tyres with the entire field scrambling behind him. He did nothing to earn it — the safety car timing was pure mercy — but that's racing.

What happened next was not. Mercedes brought him in on Lap 33 for hard tyres. Every other front-runner waited one more lap. That single lap cost Antonelli track position he never got back.

The real mistake came on Lap 44. The rain started again. Norris pitted immediately for intermediates. So did Verstappen. So did Russell in the other Mercedes. Antonelli stayed out on slicks for three more laps, bleeding time with every corner.

By the time they finally brought him in on Lap 44, the gap to Norris had grown from ten seconds to a minute and a half. He clawed back five seconds in the final sprint, but the podium was gone.

Norris won because McLaren made one decision correctly: when the rain returned, they reacted first. Antonelli lost a podium because Mercedes made two decisions incorrectly: pitting a lap too early for slicks, then staying out a lap too late when the weather turned.

The safety car gave Mercedes a result they had no right to expect. They turned P3 into P4 with hesitation. In Shanghai, when the weather changes, the team that blinks first wins. Mercedes blinked last in Melbourne. They can't afford to do it again.
