McLaren threw away the fastest car in Abu Dhabi

Norris was eight-tenths quicker than Verstappen on race pace, yet finished 17 seconds behind after a baffling second stop that solved nothing.

Lando Norris had the fastest car in Abu Dhabi. Not by a tenth — by eight-tenths per lap. He started second, ran clean, and finished 17 seconds behind Max Verstappen after McLaren brought him in for a second stop that made no sense whatsoever.

Norris came in seven laps earlier than Verstappen — then stopped again on Lap 40 while his teammate ran to the flag.

The first stop on Lap 16 was defensible. McLaren wanted track position, and a shorter first stint on mediums gave them flexibility. Verstappen stayed out seven laps longer, extending to Lap 23, which gave Red Bull the tyre offset they needed.

But here's the problem: Norris was faster anyway. His degradation on the hard tyre was negligible — minus 0.039 seconds per lap, slower than Verstappen's near-zero deg rate, but not enough to justify what came next.

Lap 40. Norris came in for a second stop. Verstappen didn't. Piastri, in the other McLaren, didn't either — he ran his hard stint for 18 laps and finished second.

McLaren will say they were protecting against undercut threats or managing tyre life, but the data doesn't support it. Norris wasn't falling off. He was the fastest car on track and had been for 20 laps. Someone on the pit wall saw Piastri close the gap and panicked.

The decision cost Norris everything. He rejoined 30 seconds behind Verstappen with nothing to gain except fastest lap, which he duly set on Lap 48. Piastri, running the strategy Norris should have been on, finished second — 13 seconds behind the winner but comfortably clear of Norris.

This wasn't a marginal call. It was the fastest car in the field being pulled in for tyres it didn't need, solving a problem that didn't exist.

The pace advantage was real

Norris carried more speed through the final sector — the McLaren was simply faster, especially on the hard compound.

If McLaren are serious about winning races, they need to stop reacting and start dictating. Norris had the pace. He had track position after the first stop. He had clean air. All he needed was for the team to leave him alone.

Instead, they gave Verstappen a win he didn't have to fight for. Next time McLaren have the fastest car, the question won't be whether Norris can execute — it'll be whether the pit wall lets him.
