Red Bull's Long-Run Disaster Explains Perez's Slide to Seventh

Charles Leclerc was six-tenths faster per lap than Sergio Perez over race distance — and the gap tells you everything about Red Bull's tyre problem.

Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez started 26 laps on the medium tyre, then 30 laps on the hard. Identical strategies, identical compounds, identical pit timing. Leclerc finished first. Perez finished seventh, nearly a minute behind.

They crossed the line together after the first stint — separated by three seconds when both took hard tyres on Lap 26. From that point, Red Bull had nowhere to go. Leclerc's average lap on the hard compound was 0.79 seconds faster. Over 30 laps, that's the entire gap.

This wasn't a strategy failure. Red Bull didn't miss a pit window or get caught in traffic. They just couldn't keep pace once the tyres came into play.

Half a second per lap in Sector 2. That's the long acceleration zone out of the hairpin and onto the back straight — the part of the circuit where tyre grip and mechanical balance matter most. Ferrari's hard compound came alive. Red Bull's didn't.

Perez's degradation rate on the hard was identical to Leclerc's — both dropped 0.03 seconds per lap. But his baseline pace was already eight-tenths slower. You can't recover from that when the tyres aren't sliding. This was pure long-run deficit.

Red Bull needs to understand why their car couldn't sustain pace on the hard tyre in these conditions. Track temperature was 46°C — warm, but not extreme. Leclerc wasn't nursing tyres home. He was pushing, and the Ferrari responded.

Mexico City is next. Higher altitude, different tyre compounds, thinner air. If Red Bull's long-run balance issues follow them there, Perez won't finish seventh. He'll finish worse.
