Look at the raw numbers and you see a 1.2-second gap between Hamilton and Russell. Catastrophic. Career-ending, even. But those numbers are comparing Hamilton's best lap from a six-lap session to Russell's best from fourteen laps. That's not a like-for-like comparison. That's comparing a warm-up run to a full session.

Hamilton had his lap deleted for track limits at Turn 12 on lap 4. Fine. It happens. But then Mercedes pulled him after just two more laps — lap 6 — while the session was still live. Meanwhile, Russell kept pushing through lap 14, banking multiple attempts, surviving his own track limits deletion, working through two red flags, and ultimately putting together the lap that got him P6.

P19 looks ugly in the results sheet. But the story isn't in the final position. It's in the lap count. And that story is about the team, not the driver.
