Pierre Gasly beat Lando Norris in the one sector that actually matters at COTA — and walked away with nothing to show for it.

Everyone will remember this qualifying for Lando Norris taking pole. They should remember it for Pierre Gasly losing nearly half a second to Norris in Sector 2 — the long, fast, engine-critical sector where races are actually won at COTA — and somehow finishing P7 anyway.

That's not a typo. Gasly was 0.441 seconds faster than the pole-sitter through the sector that matters most.

Sector 2 at COTA is where you prove you have a championship car. It's the long blast down the back straight into Turn 12, where power units earn their salaries and aero efficiency separates pretenders from contenders. Gasly murdered Norris there. He also beat him in Sector 3, the technical stadium section where everyone says McLaren is untouchable.

And he still lost by seven tenths overall. Because Alpine gave him a car that hemorrhaged 0.167 seconds in Sector 1 alone — the uphill run through the S-curves where mechanical grip and front-end bite are everything. That's the equivalent of showing up to a knife fight with a really nice hat.

Watch the blue line through the opening sequence — Norris is already ahead before the first sector even ends. Gasly claws it back on the straight, then loses it again in the stadium.

This is what people miss when they talk about McLaren dominance. Yes, they're fast. Yes, Norris took pole. But the data shows something more specific: McLaren wins in the slow corners, not the fast ones. Gasly had more power and better efficiency. He was carrying more speed where it should matter most.

But modern F1 isn't won on the straights anymore. It's won in Turns 1 through 6, where Norris built an insurmountable gap before Gasly even got to use his advantage. The McLaren turns in cleaner, rotates faster, and gets back to power earlier. By the time Gasly hit the straight and started clawing back time, the lap was already lost.

And then there's the track limits disaster. Gasly had two lap times deleted — one at Turn 19, one at Turn 12. Both in sessions where he was finally stringing together clean laps. That's not bad luck. That's a car with such a sketchy front end that the driver has to push the limits of the track just to stay competitive.

Norris didn't have a single lap deleted. Because when your car works in slow corners, you don't have to cheat the track to find time.

The McLaren is the fastest car at COTA. But only because it's the fastest car in two-thirds of the circuit. Gasly proved Alpine can match them — even beat them — where raw speed matters. The problem is that raw speed doesn't matter enough anymore.

Watch Mexico. The stadium section at COTA is a preview of what's waiting in Mexico City: tight, technical, unforgiving corners where mechanical grip decides everything. If Alpine shows up with the same front-end issues, Gasly will spend another qualifying session being faster where it doesn't count.
