McLaren Waited Six Laps Too Long and Handed Verstappen the Win

Lando Norris had the fastest car in Spain by over half a second — and lost because his team refused to react until the race was already gone.

Lando Norris was six tenths faster than Max Verstappen in Spain. He started on pole, ran a clean race, and finished second. McLaren had the car to win — and threw it away by pitting six laps too late, twice.

Verstappen came in on Lap 17 and Lap 44. Norris followed six and three laps later — both times handing Red Bull track position.

The first stop decided the race. Verstappen pitted from second place on Lap 17, emerging onto fresh mediums with clear air. Norris stayed out. By the time McLaren finally reacted on Lap 23, Verstappen had built enough of a gap to emerge ahead after Norris cycled through his stop.

That's the undercut. It works when you take it early enough to exploit the tyre delta before the other car responds. McLaren waited until the undercut window had closed, then acted anyway.

The gap flips negative on Lap 24 and again on Lap 48 — both times immediately after Norris pitted. Red Bull reacted first, McLaren followed too late.

The second stop was a repeat. Verstappen pitted on Lap 44 from the lead. Norris, running second and half a second quicker per lap, stayed out again — this time for three more laps. When he finally came in on Lap 47, the gap had stretched just far enough. Verstappen came out ahead by two seconds and held it to the flag.

McLaren didn't lose this race because their strategy failed. They lost it because they didn't have one. Both times Red Bull dictated the pit window, McLaren hesitated, and by the time they committed, the undercut opportunity was gone.

Norris had the faster car everywhere

Compare the speed traces through the final chicane — Norris carries more speed in and gets back on throttle earlier. He had the pace to win.

The degradation data makes it worse. Norris's first soft stint showed almost no degradation — four-thousandths per lap. His medium stint was negative degradation, meaning the tyres improved as the stint went on. Verstappen's soft stint degraded at 0.080 seconds per lap — twenty times faster than Norris.

McLaren had the tyre life to pit early and control the race. Instead, they let Red Bull take the initiative twice, reacted late both times, and turned a dominant car into second place.

At the Austrian Grand Prix, McLaren will have another chance to prove they can convert pace into results. But Spain showed the uncomfortable truth: having the fastest car isn't enough if your pit wall won't pull the trigger first.

Red Bull didn't win this race with speed. They won it by taking the undercut windows McLaren refused to close. That shouldn't work when you're six tenths slower. This time, it did.
