Here's what actually happened: Perez lost 0.15 seconds in Sector 1, then lost another 0.39 seconds in Sector 2, then bled another 0.13 seconds in Sector 3. On paper, the middle sector looks like the massacre. But the middle sector is where you pay for mistakes you made in the first sector.

Barcelona's Sector 2 — Turns 6 through 9 — is all about entry speed. The long right-hander at Turn 9 especially. You need momentum coming out of Turn 5 to carry through the entire complex. If you're slow out of Turn 4, you're slow everywhere that follows. Perez wasn't just slow in Sector 2. He arrived there already compromised.
