Singapore's second sector is seven consecutive direction changes, none of them faster than 120 km/h, strung together by short straights where acceleration matters more than top speed. It's the kind of sequence that punishes a car that won't turn on entry — and the AMR24 won't. Alonso was only 0.048s slower in Sector 1, competitive in Sector 3, and then lost half a second in the middle where the circuit demands exactly what his car can't deliver.

This isn't new. At Monaco in May — another street circuit, another tight, technical layout — Aston Martin qualified eighth and ninth. The problem was identical: the car was stable at high speed but couldn't carry momentum through slow corners. The team responded with development focused on medium- and high-speed performance. They brought upgrades to Silverstone, Spa, Monza. All circuits where the problem doesn't show up.

The speed trace shows the pattern repeating. Norris is equal or slightly ahead on entry, then the McLaren rotates, and by corner exit the gap has opened. Not once. Every single time. That's not driver error. That's not setup. That's the platform.

Alonso qualified seventh, three-tenths behind Oscar Piastri in the other McLaren, and finished there. The race didn't change anything because the race is the same corners as qualifying, just sixty-two more times. The problem isn't strategic. It's mechanical.

The last time Aston Martin had a car this unbalanced between corner types was 2016, when the team was still called Force India. That year they were quick in a straight line, competitive on power circuits, and nowhere at Monaco or Singapore. They accepted it. The car had a design philosophy, and tight street circuits were the trade-off.

The difference is that the 2024 Aston Martin started the season competitive everywhere. Alonso qualified third in Bahrain, second in Jeddah. The car turned. Then the development path chased high-speed performance, and somewhere in that process, the low-speed rotation disappeared. Singapore is just the starkest evidence of a problem that's been building since Barcelona.

Austin is next — a circuit with a genuinely varied corner profile. Turn 1 is medium-speed, the esses are high-speed, and the final sector is all tight hairpins and ninetys. If the Aston Martin is still losing half a second through slow corners, it'll show up in Sector 3. If it doesn't, then Singapore was an outlier and the car's fine.
