Russell lost pole in the first five corners

Two sectors faster. Four hundredths quicker on exit speed. None of it mattered after Turn 5.

George Russell set the fastest time in Sector 2. He set the fastest time in Sector 3. Max Verstappen took pole by five hundredths.

The entire gap was built before they reached Turn 6.

Russell lost 0.144 seconds in the opening sequence — Turns 1 through 5. He gained 0.085s in the technical middle sector and four thousandths in the final sector. He needed to find 0.055s more. He didn't have it.

This wasn't a mistake. Russell's lap wasn't deleted. He didn't lock up or run wide. The Red Bull was simply faster through the opening corners, and the Mercedes couldn't make up that kind of deficit anywhere else on the circuit.

Qualifying in Qatar was interrupted three times by red flags. Track limits deleted ten lap times across the session. Russell set his fastest lap on his eighth and final run.

Verstappen set his two laps earlier. It held.

Abu Dhabi has the same problem for Mercedes — a long, fast opening sector where the Red Bull traditionally finds time. If Russell wants pole at the season finale, he'll need to solve Turns 1 through 5 first.
