Ocon didn't finish P20 because his car was slow. He finished P20 because he couldn't complete a clean qualifying simulation without putting a wheel wrong. In a session with three red flags and track limits penalties flying everywhere, Gasly stayed disciplined. Ocon didn't.

Qatar is brutal on track limits. Turn 10 claimed Alonso three times. Turn 6 got Norris, Colapinto, and Albon. This wasn't a circuit where you could push to the edge and get away with it — the stewards were surgical.

Gasly adapted. Five pit stops, eighteen laps on one set of softs, no deleted times. He drove within himself, banked the lap, moved on. Ocon tried to extract every tenth and paid for it with lap after lap of wasted rubber and deleted times. By Lap 10, his session was over. Gasly kept pushing until Lap 18.

Here's what makes this worse: Ocon's fastest clean lap was quicker than Gasly's. The speed trace proves it — higher apex speeds, better exits, more confidence through the flowing middle sector. The car wasn't the problem. The discipline was.

Qualifying isn't about who can go fastest on one corner. It's about who can string together sixteen turns without giving the stewards a reason to delete your lap time. Gasly understood that. Ocon didn't.

At Abu Dhabi — the final race for both drivers in Alpine colours — watch the track limits again. Yas Marina has some of the most aggressive run-off policing on the calendar, especially at Turn 5 and the chicane. If Ocon can't adapt there, this nine-position gap won't be a one-off.

Speed is worthless if you can't keep it between the white lines. Gasly proved that in Qatar. Ocon didn't.
