The Safety Car handed Williams a free tyre change on Lap 1. Sargeant gained eight places — and still finished 35 seconds behind the winner.

The Safety Car came out on Lap 1. Williams pulled Sargeant into the pits immediately. Everyone else — including race winner Max Verstappen — stayed out and served their stops under green the following lap, bleeding 130 seconds into the pit lane.

Sargeant's timing wasn't strategy. It was a lottery ticket that happened to print. He jumped from eighteenth to tenth without a single on-track pass.

Williams gambled on softs. Verstappen took mediums.

Here's the problem: Williams put Sargeant on softs. In 44-degree track temperatures. For a 19-lap sprint.

Verstappen ran mediums. By Lap 6, the gap was already five seconds. By Lap 10, it was back to where it started before the Safety Car. By the chequered flag, Sargeant was 35 seconds behind the leader — further back than if he'd never pitted under yellow at all.

The degradation numbers confirm it. Sargeant's softs were losing more than a second per lap. Verstappen's mediums were essentially flat — +0.015 seconds per lap, which in a sprint might as well be zero.

Williams saw the Safety Car and grabbed the free stop. They didn't think about what happens when the tyres fall off a cliff halfway through a race in Miami.

But this wasn't racecraft. It was timing — and even then, the wrong tyre erased the advantage before the race was half over. At Imola, if the Safety Car lottery pays out again, Williams needs to remember: a free stop is only free if the tyres last.
