Red Bull Threw Away a Podium with a Pit Stop They Didn't Need

Sergio Perez had the pace to finish third. Then his team panicked under the Safety Car and stopped him twice.

Sergio Perez was quicker than Lando Norris. The telemetry confirms it: Perez had the faster car, posted the faster lap, and ran cleaner race pace. He finished fourth. Norris won.

The reason is excruciating. Red Bull stopped Perez twice under Safety Cars — once on Lap 17 when the entire field was cycling through, and again on Lap 28 when they saw the rest of the top six diving in. That second stop was pure panic. Norris stayed out, inherited the lead, and never gave it back.

Perez's hard tyres were eleven laps old. He had 29 laps to go. The degradation on those hards was flat — he was losing barely a tenth per lap. There was no tyre cliff coming. There was no strategic imperative. Red Bull saw everyone else pit and reacted instead of thinking.

The strategy that never made sense

Perez's third stint was 29 laps on mediums. He could have done that on the hards he was already running.

Norris stayed out until Lap 29 — one lap later — and bolted on hards for a 28-lap run to the flag. Perez did the exact same distance on mediums, the softer compound, and his tyres held up fine. If Red Bull had left him out on hards during that Safety Car, he finishes the race on the faster tyre with track position over Norris.

Instead, they handed McLaren the lead and asked Perez to chase down a car he was marginally quicker than over 57 laps. He couldn't. The gap at the flag was 15 seconds. That's the cost of one unnecessary pit stop.

The frustrating part is that Red Bull knew they had the quicker car. Perez was controlling the race from fourth on the grid, running longer stints than anyone around him, managing the mediums beautifully through the first 17 laps. His pace after the first stop was strong. His degradation was negligible. There was no reason to doubt the plan.

But when the Safety Car came out on Lap 28, Red Bull saw Leclerc, Sainz, and Piastri pit. They blinked. They brought Perez in for tyres he didn't need, and McLaren — who had nothing to lose from fifth — stayed out and took the win.

At Imola in two weeks, Red Bull needs to remember something simple: pace wins races, not pit stops. Perez had the pace. They gave away the result. If McLaren shows up with this kind of speed again and Red Bull keeps making reactive calls under pressure, they're going to hand away results they should be controlling.

Norris drove a clean race. McLaren made the brave call. But this wasn't a race McLaren won. It was a race Red Bull lost.
