Except that's not what happened. The data tells a completely different story — and it points straight at the McLaren pit wall.

Here's what actually happened: Piastri was leading the race on Lap 23. He'd jumped Max Verstappen during the first round of stops and was controlling the pace on his Medium tyres. Then McLaren put him on Hards for his second stint — and the race fell apart.

Those Hards degraded at minus 4.5 seconds per lap. That's not a typo. Every lap on that compound, Piastri's pace got worse by four and a half seconds. His average lap time on the Hards was 102 seconds. For context, Norris on the same compound was averaging 92 seconds. That's a ten-second-per-lap difference on identical rubber.

McLaren realized the mistake and brought him back in on Lap 40 for Mediums — the compound Norris was avoiding because it had already done 29 laps in baking Miami heat. But by then, Piastri had lost forty seconds to the leaders and dropped to 14th. The rescue stop was damage control, not strategy.

Meanwhile, Norris went Medium to Hard — the conventional play — stopped once on Lap 29, and cruised home. His Hards actually got faster as the stint went on, improving by a quarter-second per lap. Same team. Same tyres. Completely opposite degradation profile.

So why did McLaren put Piastri on Hards when they clearly weren't working? The Safety Car on Lap 28 scrambled the field, and the team panicked. They'd already committed Piastri to the undercut on Lap 27, so when the Safety Car came out a lap later, they doubled down and put him on the tyre they thought would last.

It didn't. The track temperature was 45°C. The Hards were graining instantly. And instead of reacting, McLaren left him out there for thirteen laps while the field sailed past.

The final gap was 50 seconds. Twelve positions. A rookie embarrassed in front of his home continent. Except he wasn't embarrassed — he was sabotaged by a strategy call that made no sense the moment he radioed that the Hards weren't working.
