On paper, this was the safety car gift every team dreams about. Alonso had just completed his stop under green, swapping worn hards for fresh mediums. When the yellow flags flew one lap later, everyone else was forced to pit under caution or continue on tyres with 23 laps of punishment already on them.

The lesson for Imola is simple: track position doesn't mean anything if you're slower. Aston Martin got extraordinarily lucky with the timing of their stop. They finished ninth because the medium tyre in Miami heat had no chance of lasting 35 laps at race pace.
