That's not a driver mistake. That's a car that won't rotate. Verstappen averaged 96.5 seconds per lap on the soft tyre with essentially zero degradation—his times didn't fall off. Russell averaged over 100 seconds and was losing nearly eight-tenths per lap to tyre drop-off by the end of his soft stint. The Red Bull was planted. The Mercedes was sliding.

Miami's Sector 2 is a litmus test for mechanical grip and low-speed balance. The chicane at Turns 8–9, the tight left-hander at Turn 11—these are corners where a nervous rear end kills you. And that's exactly what the data shows: Russell couldn't carry the speed Verstappen could through the direction changes, and by the time he was back on the straight, the lap was already gone.

Mercedes switched Russell to mediums for the final three laps of the session—a bizarre choice that suggests they'd already conceded the fight for pole. Verstappen stayed on softs and kept pushing. The gap ballooned to over 500 seconds on-track by the end, not because of strategy but because one car was still improving and the other had given up.

Here's what to watch at Imola: Sector 2 in Miami is slow chicanes. Imola has Rivazza, Acque Minerali, Variante Alta—tight, technical corners where rear stability is everything. If Mercedes shows up with the same nervous platform, Russell won't be fighting for pole. He'll be fighting to stay in the top ten. And the problem won't be the driver. It'll be the same half-second they keep losing in the one sector that matters most.
