Alonso made his tyres last 46 laps on a street circuit. Stroll made his last 41 laps and still couldn't keep up. That's not a strategy problem.

Here's what actually happened: Alonso pitted on lap four, bolted on hards, and ran them for 46 laps. Stroll pitted on lap nine, also bolted on hards, and ran them for 41 laps. Both drivers did a second stop late in the race — Alonso on lap 24, Stroll on lap 28 — and both went back out on hards again.

So for 41 laps, they were on identical tyres. Alonso averaged 99.16 seconds per lap. Stroll averaged 99.03 seconds. Wait — Stroll was faster?

No. Because degradation tells the real story. Stroll's mediums were bleeding time at minus 0.415 seconds per lap before he pitted. Alonso's softs? Minus 0.062 seconds per lap. The softs barely degraded at all in four laps of work.

By the time Stroll pitted, he'd already lost five seconds to track position alone. And once they were both on hards, Alonso's pace held. Stroll's didn't. The 0.626-second gap in average lap time came almost entirely from after they were on the same compound.

The gap never closed. Not once.

This wasn't an undercut story. This wasn't a strategy disaster. This was 50 laps of one driver being faster than the other in the same car on the same tyres on a circuit with nowhere to hide.
