Lando Norris was nearly a second quicker per lap than George Russell. A third pit stop threw it all away.

George Russell won the Las Vegas Grand Prix from pole. Lando Norris, who started sixth, was almost a second quicker per lap across the race distance. Norris finished sixth, 37 seconds behind.

Mercedes committed to a two-stop strategy early. Russell pitted on Lap 12, took on the hard compound, and ran it to the end. Thirty-eight consecutive laps on the same set of tyres. The degradation rate was -0.053 seconds per lap, which means the tyres were actually getting faster as fuel burned off and track conditions improved.

McLaren matched the strategy at first. Norris pitted three laps earlier, on Lap 9, and bolted on his own set of hards. The plan was identical: run to the end. The pace advantage was immediate.

Norris closed the gap — until Lap 30

The first vertical spike is Lap 30. That's McLaren's second stop. The gap jumps from 25 seconds to 45 in two laps.

Between Laps 10 and 30, Norris ran an average lap time of 97.9 seconds. Russell, on the same compound, ran 97.8 seconds. The McLaren wasn't just faster — it was managing the tyres better. Norris's degradation rate on the hard compound was -0.095 seconds per lap. The tyres were improving, not falling off.

Then, on Lap 30, McLaren brought him in. They took off a set of hards that had 18 laps on them and put on a fresh set of softs. Russell stayed out. The undercut window had closed ten laps earlier. There was no strategic justification — just a decision to pit because the box was empty.

Norris rejoined 45 seconds behind Russell. The soft tyres gave him the fastest lap of the race — on Lap 50, after a red flag, when it no longer mattered. He finished sixth, behind cars he'd been faster than all evening.

Mercedes executed a textbook two-stop in cool conditions on a low-deg circuit. McLaren had the faster car, the better starting tyre, and the track position to challenge. They threw it away by pitting when they didn't need to. Someone on the pit wall confused activity with strategy.

In Qatar, McLaren will need to decide whether they trust their tyres. The hard compound in Vegas could run 38 laps without falling off a cliff. If they panic again and pit unnecessarily, it won't matter how much faster their car is.
