Lando Norris Had the Faster Car. McLaren Gave Him the Slower Race.

McLaren pulled Norris off the mediums eleven laps into a stint that should have gone twenty-five. The pit wall panicked, and it cost him two positions he didn't need to lose.

Lando Norris was eight tenths faster than Max Verstappen through Sector 1. He was half a second faster through Sector 2. He was two tenths faster through Sector 3. He finished fifth. Verstappen won.

This wasn't a race the Red Bull driver took. It was a race McLaren gave away.

The race ended on lap 11. That's when McLaren pulled Norris off the mediums and onto the hards for a 42-lap stint to the flag. The problem: his mediums weren't done. The data shows them degrading at 0.216 seconds per lap — steep, yes, but manageable for another ten laps at least. Verstappen stayed out on his mediums until lap 34. Twenty-three laps longer.

McLaren saw Sergio Perez stop on lap 1 after the red flag restart, panicked about the undercut, and reacted. It was the wrong decision. Norris was faster. He didn't need to cover anyone. He needed to dictate.

That spike on lap 11 is Norris pitting. From there, Verstappen controlled the race from the front with older, slower tyres. McLaren gave him track position for free.

Once Norris came out behind Verstappen, the race was over. He was stuck managing a 42-lap hard tyre stint while Verstappen ran shorter stints with better tyre life. When Red Bull finally stopped on lap 34, they bolted on fresh hards for a 19-lap sprint to the flag — tyres that were barely used by the time the chequered flag came out.

Norris's hards? They were 23 laps old by then. The degradation data flatlines at -0.076 seconds per lap, which sounds fine until you realise Verstappen's final stint degraded at +0.008 — essentially zero. Fresh rubber beats old rubber. McLaren knew this and stopped him anyway.

The truly maddening part: McLaren stopped Norris again on lap 26, fifteen laps into that hard stint, trying to salvage something. It didn't work. By then he was fifth, stuck behind Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, both of whom had run longer first stints and gotten better track position as a result.

This wasn't bad luck. This wasn't a Verstappen masterclass. This was a team with the faster car making a reactive strategy call that turned a potential podium into fifth place.

Shanghai is next week. If McLaren are serious about competing at the front, they need to learn this lesson now: when you have the faster car, you don't react. You dictate. Norris was faster than Verstappen in every meaningful sector. The only place he was slower was on the strategy sheet.

Red Bull didn't win this race. McLaren lost it on lap 11.
