The narrative around Stroll is always the same: he's inconsistent, he has flashes of pace, he's developing. Fine. But Suzuka wasn't inconsistency. It was a 1.3-second-per-lap gap to his teammate in identical machinery on one of the most technical circuits on the calendar.

This wasn't bad luck with traffic or a botched out-lap. Alonso completed 12 laps on softs in qualifying. Stroll managed six before his session ended. The team kept sending Alonso back out because the car had more to give. They stopped sending Stroll out because it didn't matter.

Suzuka is merciless. It punishes hesitation. The Esses demand commitment, 130R is flat if you trust the car, and Spoon rewards drivers who can rotate the car on entry without scrubbing speed. Alonso's speed trace shows a driver who believed the car would hold. Stroll's shows someone lifting earlier, braking deeper, taking fewer risks.

Maybe that's smart. Maybe that's self-preservation when the car doesn't feel right. But the result is P16 while your teammate is in the top five, and no amount of caution explains an 11-place gap.

Alonso will be fine. He always is at circuits that demand precision. The question is whether his teammate can keep the gap under a second — because 1.3 per lap doesn't look like a bad day. It looks like a driver out of his depth.
