McLaren Threw Away Monza With a Pit Stop That Gained Nothing

Oscar Piastri was faster than Charles Leclerc all afternoon. Then McLaren called him in for a second stop he didn't need.

Oscar Piastri was the fastest driver at Monza. He qualified on the front row, matched Charles Leclerc on the opening stint, and was over a second a lap faster on race pace. He finished second.

McLaren called him in for a second pit stop on Lap 38. Ferrari didn't. That's the race.

The first stint was identical. Piastri and Leclerc both ran mediums for 15 laps, both pitted for hards within a lap of each other, and both rejoined in traffic. The strategies were locked in step. The difference was the pace.

Piastri was degrading his hard tyres at negative 0.019 seconds per lap — meaning he was getting faster as the stint went on. Leclerc's hards were barely degrading at all, but he wasn't finding the same time. Over 37 laps on the hard tyre, Piastri was consistently quicker. The McLaren had the pace to win on a one-stop. Ferrari knew it. McLaren blinked.

Piastri led for 15 laps. Then McLaren gave it away.

Look at the lap Piastri pitted: Lap 38. He had 15 laps to go. His tyres were still quick. He was leading the race.

McLaren's call only makes sense if they thought the hard compound was about to fall off a cliff. It didn't. Leclerc ran those same hards another 15 laps and never struggled. The data shows his degradation rate was lower than Piastri's — negative 0.007 seconds per lap. Ferrari's engineers saw that. They trusted it. McLaren didn't.

This wasn't a bad read on tyre life. This was a panic call. Someone on the McLaren pit wall saw Leclerc staying out and assumed Ferrari knew something they didn't. They reacted instead of dictating.

The result: Piastri gave up 23 seconds of clean air, rejoined in traffic, and spent the final 15 laps chasing a car he'd already beaten on pace. He crossed the line 2.7 seconds behind. If McLaren leaves him out, he wins.

Piastri had the faster car all race.

At Baku, watch the pit wall. If McLaren has pace on Ferrari again, they need to trust it. One-stop races are won by the team that commits first and forces everyone else to react. Ferrari did that at Monza. McLaren flinched.
