Mercedes put Russell on the hard tyre first. That's defensible from P17 — you need track position, and the hard buys you a long first stint. The problem came at the second stop.

Instead of going back to the hard for the run home, they bolted on mediums. For twenty laps. Then, with seventeen laps remaining and Russell finally in clean air after clawing back to eighth, they switched him back to hards. The same compound he'd already done thirty-three laps on earlier in the race.

The degradation numbers tell you everything. Russell's first hard stint? Basically flat — negative 0.014 seconds per lap. The tyre wasn't going anywhere. His final hard stint, starting on Lap 54? Plus 0.179 seconds per lap.

That's not a tyre. That's a countdown timer.

Piastri's final stint was on fresh mediums. Russell's was on a compound the car had already cycled through for half the race, now asked to deliver performance on a 45-degree track in the final fifteen laps. The medium-hard-medium strategy Piastri ran is textbook Hungary: you get two bites at the faster tyre when it matters.

Russell ran hard-medium-hard. He got one bite at the faster compound, burned it in traffic midrace, then spent the final stint managing a tyre that had nothing left to give.

Even on dead rubber, Russell was quicker than the race winner through Sector 3. That's how much pace Mercedes left on the table. The car was fast enough to fight for the podium. The strategy made it impossible.

The question for Spa isn't whether Mercedes can find speed. It's whether they can stop making decisions that throw it away.
