Norris set his fastest lap on Lap 17. Piastri set his on Lap 18. The gap was 0.022 seconds. Verstappen was 0.024 seconds behind Piastri. Twenty-six laps of session, five stoppages, and the top three landed inside five hundredths.

That is not supposed to happen. Not in conditions like this. Not at the Hungaroring, where one damp kerb at Turn 11 sends you into the barrier and one dry line through Turn 2 hands you three tenths.

Norris won Sector 1 by five hundredths. Lost Sector 2 by nine hundredths. Won Sector 3 by a hundredth and a half. He was slower through the middle of the lap and still took pole. That tells you how fine the margins were and how perfectly he threaded the final sequence.

Piastri was quicker through Turns 5 to 9 — the twisty mid-sector where mechanical grip matters most in the wet. He gave it back in the opening sector and couldn't claw it back through the final corners. The difference was six metres at the line.

Verstappen was 0.046 seconds off pole. In a session where the weather changed eleven times and half the field had laps deleted for track limits, the top three separated by less than five hundredths is borderline absurd. It suggests the circuit dried at exactly the same rate for exactly the right three laps, and all three drivers hit it.

They did. Lap 17 and Lap 18 were the window. Bottas led on Lap 7. Sainz led on Lap 17. By Lap 18, the front three had locked in. The session continued for eight more laps. Nobody got close.

What this means for Belgium: McLaren have now taken pole in mixed conditions at one of the tightest circuits on the calendar. Spa is the opposite — long straights, high speed, less reliance on mechanical grip. If the weather stays dry, this tells you nothing.

If it rains again, watch Sector 2. Piastri was faster there today. That won't have gone unnoticed.
