Let's be clear about what happened here. Stroll ran a conventional one-stop: medium tyres for 37 laps, then hards to the flag. Clean, simple, boring. He finished ninth, gained four places from his grid slot, and never got anywhere near trouble.

Alonso? Soft tyres for seven laps. Then hard tyres for 33 laps. Then mediums for 19 laps. Then softs again for three laps before the red flag. He made three stops in a race where almost everyone made one. He gained one position — from 20th to 19th — and finished a lap down.

One driver made racing look easy. The other made four tyre changes.

Here's the part that makes this indefensible: Alonso's pace wasn't bad. On the hard tyres between laps 8 and 40, he averaged 82.6 seconds per lap with almost no degradation. On the mediums from lap 41 to 59, he was averaging 81.5 seconds — faster than Stroll's entire race average of 81.8 seconds.

The problem wasn't the driver. It was the decision to keep stopping. Every pit stop costs roughly 25 seconds at Imola. Alonso made three. That's 75 seconds of pure lost time before you even factor in the in-laps and out-laps. Stroll made one stop and cruised home.

You could argue Alonso started from the back and had nothing to lose. Fair. But then why stop him three times when the tyres were holding up fine? Why put him on softs with three laps to go when the race was about to red-flag anyway? This wasn't experimentation — it was panic.

The lap time gap tells you everything: 1.566 seconds per lap in Stroll's favor. That's not because Stroll drove brilliantly. It's because Alonso spent half the race driving in and out of the pit lane.

So what should you watch for at Monaco? Whether Aston Martin has learned anything. Monaco is the one track where strategy matters more than pace, where one extra stop can drop you from eighth to 15th, where the win or loss happens in the pit lane.

If they're still throwing caution flags at phantom degradation and stopping Alonso three times while Stroll runs a textbook race, this isn't a one-off. It's a pattern. And the two-time world champion deserves better than being lapped by his teammate because someone in the strategy room lost the plot.
