Sainz was nearly four-tenths faster through Tamburello, Villeneuve, Tosa, and Piratella. That's the part of Imola where aero efficiency and mechanical grip dictate your session. The Ferrari had the speed. Verstappen clawed back two-tenths in Sector 2 and barely a tenth in the Rivazza complex — not enough to explain a four-position swing.

What explains it is this: Sainz made eight pit stops. Verstappen made six. Ferrari kept chasing a clean lap that didn't exist. The track limits deletions tell the story — Sainz had three laps wiped for exceeding limits at Turns 6, 9, and 18. Every deletion sent Ferrari back to the pit lane for another reset. Red Bull, meanwhile, built their session around Verstappen's Lap 17 — put him out on fresh softs, gave him clean air, let him execute.

The tyre data makes Ferrari's approach even harder to defend. Sainz ran mediums for the first eight laps — a compound that degraded at two seconds per lap in qualifying conditions — then switched to softs that stayed consistent across twelve laps. Verstappen stayed on softs the entire session and got faster as track evolution came in. Ferrari treated qualifying like a race simulation. Red Bull treated it like qualifying.

Three red flags didn't help anyone, but they didn't punish Ferrari specifically. Everyone dealt with the same interruptions. The difference is Red Bull used the stoppages to regroup. Ferrari used them to panic.

Monaco is next — a track where you get one or two clean laps maximum, and track position is the entire race. If Ferrari brings the same reactive, indecisive approach to Saturday in Monte Carlo, they'll qualify mid-pack with a car that deserves the front row.

Sainz gave them the pace. They gave him eight pit stops. That's not a driver problem. That's a team that didn't know what they were optimizing for until it was too late.
