There's a moment on every qualifying lap where Lance Stroll's Aston Martin goes into Zandvoort's banked final sector and simply... disappears. Not dramatically. Not with a mistake. It just bleeds time, corner after corner, until the lap is already over before he crosses the line.

This wasn't about one mistake or one corner where Stroll got it wrong. He lost over half a second to Norris in Sector 3 alone — the banked turns 11 through 14 that should reward commitment and trust in the car. Norris was finding time everywhere, sure: a tenth and a quarter through the first two sectors. But Sector 3 was where the Aston Martin just stopped fighting.

The banked corners expose everything. You need the car to turn on entry, hold the line through the banking, and accelerate hard onto the short straight before the next turn arrives. If the rear isn't planted, if the diff isn't rotating the car, if there's even a hint of understeer — you're slow everywhere. And Stroll was slow everywhere.

Look at the speed trace and you can see it: Norris carries speed through the entire final sector, the McLaren glued to the banking. Stroll's line tells a different story — moments of hesitation, of the car not doing what he needs it to do. This is what it looks like when the setup isn't there. You can be brave. You can nail your marks. But if the car won't turn or the rear won't stick, you're just managing a slow lap.

By the time Stroll crossed the line on his fastest lap — lap 15, nearly a second slower than Norris — it was already decided. P8 in qualifying. Never close. The Aston Martin had pace through Sector 1 and 2, relatively speaking. But Zandvoort is about those banked turns, and the Aston Martin just couldn't find grip where it mattered.

Stroll finished qualifying in P8. Norris took pole. The gap between them wasn't one moment, one corner, one missed apex. It was four banked turns that the Aston Martin never figured out. Half a second, lap after lap, compounding into a qualifying session that was over before it began.

Monza is next — a power circuit, flat-out, no banking to expose the car. But if Aston Martin couldn't get the setup right at Zandvoort, a track they've raced at for years, what happens when the margins get even thinner?
