Ocon's qualifying imploded when Alpine needed him most

Let's be clear about what happened at Zandvoort. Alpine had a car that was fundamentally unraceable in qualifying trim. Three red flags. Pit stops every two or three laps. Whatever they were trying to fix in the garage, it wasn't working. This was a disaster for both drivers.

But pace doesn't matter when you can't finish the session. Gasly kept the car on track for another eleven laps after Ocon retired. He averaged over a second slower, yes — but he was still out there. In a qualifying session this chaotic, the driver who survives wins.

The speed trace is haunting. These are Alpine's two fastest laps — Gasly on lap 13, Ocon on lap 8 — and they're almost perfectly matched through the opening sector. Same car, same setup, same soft compound. Then Ocon's line just... stops existing. He never got another chance to build on it.

Gasly did. Five more pit stops, eleven more laps, and a P9 finish that felt like a victory lap given the circumstances. Not because he was faster. Because he finished.
