It was the kind of lottery win teams dream about. Hamilton had just bolted on Hard tyres for a 35-lap run to the flag. Everyone who hadn't pitted yet — most of the midfield — was now forced to stop under Safety Car and rejoin behind him. He'd leapfrogged nine cars without passing anyone.

And Max Verstappen, who'd already pitted on Lap 13 and was running the same Hard compound, still finished 58 seconds up the road.

This wasn't a strategy problem. Mercedes didn't get the call wrong — they got it perfectly right. Pitting one lap before a Safety Car is the single luckiest thing that can happen to you in a Grand Prix. It's a get-out-of-jail card for a bad qualifying, a free undercut on the entire field, a reset button on track position.

Hamilton used it to finish ninth. Verstappen, who started on pole and controlled the race from the front, used his Safety Car stop to extend a lead he never looked like losing.

The on-track gap tells you everything. Hamilton's best laps were in the low 1:41s. Verstappen's were in the high 1:39s. On the same tyre. On the same fuel load. On a day when Mercedes caught the single biggest piece of luck a backmarker can hope for.

That's a two-second-per-lap deficit when both cars are pushing. Over 35 laps, it's a minute. Which is almost exactly what the final gap was.

The Safety Car didn't expose Mercedes. It just gave them enough track position to make the gap visible. Hamilton drove a clean race, made the tyres last, and capitalized on the chaos to bring home two points from 18th on the grid.

But when the best possible timing still leaves you a minute behind, the problem isn't strategy. It's the car. And there's no Safety Car lottery that fixes that.
