Fernando Alonso threw away seventh with one unnecessary stop

Aston Martin had the pace to finish fifth. They panicked under the safety car and turned a strong race into a damage-limitation exercise.

Fernando Alonso was faster than Max Verstappen in China. Not marginally — six tenths faster over race distance. He finished seventh. Verstappen won.

The difference was one decision: Aston Martin brought Alonso in for a third stop during the safety car chaos on lap 43. They didn't need to.

Both ran medium-hard. Then Verstappen committed to a 43-lap hard stint. Alonso stopped twice more.

The race split at lap 23. Both drivers pitted under the safety car — Verstappen onto hards for the run home, Alonso onto softs. That was the aggressive call, the one that could have won track position while others played it safe.

It worked. Alonso was running seventh on lap 43 with pace in hand. The hard tyre was the conservative choice and it was getting slower — Verstappen's lap times were climbing. Alonso's softs were holding. He had the faster strategy.

Then someone on the pit wall blinked. When the safety car came out again on lap 43, Aston Martin brought Alonso in for mediums. A free stop, they probably thought. Fresh rubber, hedge the bet, protect against degradation that wasn't happening.

Here's what it cost: 20 seconds. That's the gap Alonso gave away by stopping when the drivers who stayed out — Leclerc, Sainz, Russell — kept track position. He dropped from seventh to ninth and spent the rest of the race clawing back past cars he'd already beaten.

The mediums Alonso bolted on for that final stint? They were 0.6 seconds faster per lap than Verstappen's worn hards. He had the pace to close on the leaders. But he was 40 seconds back with 13 laps to run, stuck behind Piastri and Russell, burning laps in dirty air.

Verstappen cruised home on a two-stop. Alonso finished seventh on a three-stop with better pace. That's not racing luck. That's a team making the decision that feels safe instead of the one that wins races.
