Max Verstappen was four-tenths faster than Oscar Piastri through Shanghai's final sector in qualifying. The McLaren was close everywhere else — a tenth here, a tenth there — but through Turns 11 to 16, the Red Bull pulled away like it was on a different compound.

We've seen this before. Bahrain 2022, lap 1. Red Bull had that same crushing sector advantage, the kind that looks like a fundamental car concept gap rather than setup or driver brilliance. By Silverstone, five months later, Ferrari and Mercedes had closed it. By Singapore, Red Bull didn't have it at all.

The sector-three advantage in 2022 came from Red Bull's floor stability through medium and high-speed corners — the RB18 could carry more speed without bottoming or losing front-end grip. The effect was most visible in exactly the kind of sequence Shanghai's final sector offers: the fast Turn 11, the double-apex Turn 13, the long Turn 14 that loads the left side. Verstappen won eight of the first ten races that season on the strength of that advantage.

But when Ferrari brought their Barcelona upgrade and Mercedes solved their porpoising in Spa, the gap closed to a tenth, then disappeared entirely. By the time Red Bull arrived at Singapore — another circuit where sector three is technical and high-downforce — Charles Leclerc was faster through the final sector than Verstappen. Red Bull still won the championship, but they won it on reliability and consistency, not sector dominance.

Shanghai 2024 looks structurally identical. Piastri's McLaren was within a tenth in both sector one and sector two — close enough that the gap could be driver, could be one good Turn 6, could be setup compromise. But four-tenths in sector three is not a driver gap. That's the car.

The speed trace shows it clearly: Verstappen carries more speed through Turn 11, holds it longer through the Turn 13–14 sequence, and exits Turn 16 with a higher minimum speed. The McLaren isn't slow — it just can't match the Red Bull's stability under sustained load. Piastri qualified fifth, Verstappen took pole, and the final sector was the difference.

The question is how long it lasts. Miami is next, and the final sector there — Turns 11 through 16 — is another high-speed technical sequence with sustained cornering load. If Verstappen has the same four-tenths advantage through that section, the pattern holds. If McLaren closes the gap to a tenth or two, we're watching the 2022 script play out again: Red Bull dominant early, the field catching up through the European swing.

History doesn't repeat, but the telemetry does. Sector-three dominance built on mechanical advantage tends to erode as the season develops and other teams converge on the concept. Red Bull had it in 2022. They have it again now. The question isn't whether it's real — Shanghai qualifying confirmed it is. The question is whether McLaren can find it before Red Bull's advantage turns into a points buffer too large to chase down.
