Mercedes Threw Away a Canadian GP Win With a Phantom Tyre Problem

George Russell had the pace to win in Montreal — then his team invented a problem that didn't exist and handed the race to Verstappen.

George Russell started on pole. He had the fastest car. He finished third, four seconds behind Max Verstappen.

Mercedes managed to lose a race they had under control by making two pit stops that served no purpose except to slow their own driver down.

The first 45 laps were perfect. Russell and Verstappen ran identical strategies on intermediates, pitting together under the first safety car on lap 25. The track was drying, the racing line was evolving, and Russell was 0.7 seconds per lap faster on average — exactly the kind of pace advantage that wins races when you execute cleanly.

Then someone on the Mercedes pit wall blinked.

The decision that lost the race

Russell's hard tyre stint lasted nine laps. Verstappen went straight to mediums and never looked back.

Both drivers pitted again on lap 45 as the track finally dried enough for slicks. Verstappen's crew bolted on mediums. Mercedes put Russell on hards — a compound designed for high temperatures and long-distance fuel saving, neither of which applied in 18-degree air on a still-damp circuit.

The hard tyres never worked. Russell's lap times immediately ballooned to an average of 80 seconds, while Verstappen settled into high-86s on mediums. After nine agonising laps watching their driver bleed time, Mercedes admitted the mistake and called Russell back in for mediums on lap 54.

By the time Russell rejoined on the right compound, Verstappen had opened a gap too large to close even with faster pace. Russell did have faster pace — his mediums were delivering lap times three seconds quicker than his hards had managed — but he needed 25 laps to make up the damage, and the race had 16 remaining.

This wasn't a marginal call. The hards were the wrong tyre in the wrong conditions, and the data made that obvious within three laps. Mercedes didn't need nine laps to figure it out. They needed someone in the garage to override the original decision and admit the error.

What makes this infuriating is that Russell didn't need heroics to win. He had pole, he had the pace, and the strategy was working. All Mercedes had to do was copy Verstappen's second stop — mediums on lap 45 — and let their faster car do the rest.

Instead, they tried to get clever. The hards might have been an attempt to extend the stint or play a different degradation curve, but in mixed conditions with safety cars still a possibility, that kind of complexity is a solution looking for a problem. Red Bull kept it simple. Red Bull won.

At Barcelona, watch whether Mercedes trust their car's pace or keep trying to outsmart themselves. Russell had the speed to win in Canada. His team just needed to stop inventing reasons he couldn't.
