Hamilton's Sector 3 Masterclass Was Wasted on the Wrong Tyre Call

Lewis Hamilton was over a second faster through the Wall of Champions than Oscar Piastri — and still finished behind him. That's not a driver problem. That's a strategy disaster.

Lewis Hamilton was 1.141 seconds faster than Oscar Piastri through Sector 3 — the Wall of Champions chicane where races are won and lost. Hamilton set faster average lap times. He was quicker on every meaningful measure.

He finished fourth. Piastri finished fifth. That doesn't make sense until you look at what happened on Lap 54.

The final sector in Montreal is where you separate the fast from the brave. It's a high-speed chicane with no margin for error and walls on both sides. Hamilton was taking 1.1 seconds out of Piastri through there on average. That's not a small advantage. That's the difference between a driver who owns those corners and one who's managing them.

Piastri had a perfectly fine race. He stayed on a two-stop, kept his medium tyres alive for 26 laps after his final stop on Lap 44, and brought the car home without drama. Hamilton was measurably faster — and he still couldn't get past.

Look at Lap 54 — that sharp spike is Hamilton pitting for a third time. From there, the gap collapses and never recovers.

Mercedes brought Hamilton in for a third stop on Lap 54, bolted on hard tyres, and sent him back out with 16 laps to go. The idea, presumably, was that fresh rubber would let him chase down the cars ahead. The reality was that the hard compound was stone cold in those conditions, and Hamilton spent the final laps nursing degradation that hit -3.4 seconds per lap.

Piastri, meanwhile, stayed out on mediums that were degrading at just -0.4 seconds per lap. He didn't need to be faster than Hamilton. He just needed to not pit again.

This wasn't a close fight decided by racecraft. Hamilton was nearly 1.4 seconds per lap faster on average pace. He was demolishing Piastri in the one sector that matters most at this circuit. The overall lap delta was -1.391 seconds in Hamilton's favour — and he still lost the position because Mercedes made a strategy call that killed any chance of a podium.

George Russell finished third on the exact same three-stop strategy, so it's not like the idea was insane. But Russell's final stint was 16 laps. Hamilton's was the same length, and his tyres were cooked by Lap 60. The timing was wrong, the compound choice was questionable, and the result was a faster driver finishing behind a slower one.

Here's what to watch in Spain: whether Mercedes can actually execute a race where their faster driver finishes ahead of slower cars. The speed is there. Hamilton proved it. But if the strategy keeps costing them positions they should have on merit, then the data doesn't matter.

Piastri drove a clean, intelligent race and took full advantage of a two-stop that worked. Hamilton drove faster and got punished for a three-stop that didn't. That's not racing. That's just bad strategy dressed up as a top-five finish.
