Ferrari Pit Sainz One Stop Too Many at Silverstone

Carlos Sainz was faster than Lewis Hamilton all afternoon. Ferrari threw it away with a strategy that gambled on weather that never came.

Carlos Sainz was the faster driver at Silverstone. Over 52 laps of chaos — four rain showers, multiple Safety Car periods, six drivers lapped or retired — he averaged over a second per lap quicker than race winner Lewis Hamilton. He finished fifth, 47 seconds behind.

Both drivers ran Medium-Intermediate-Soft. Sainz got sent back in on Lap 50 for a two-lap sprint on fresh rubber that gained him nothing.

Ferrari's race fell apart with two laps to go. Sainz was running fifth on 11-lap-old Hard tyres — old rubber, but the track was drying and the red flag was always a possibility. Someone on the pit wall decided those Hards weren't good enough for two more laps and called him in for Softs.

The stop cost 22 seconds. He came out fifth. He finished fifth. The entire manoeuvre achieved nothing except making the gap to Hamilton look worse than it was.

The gap was stable at around 25 seconds until Lap 50. That spike at the end is the unnecessary pit stop — 22 seconds thrown away for tyres he used twice.

This wasn't a tyre gamble. It was a panic call. The rain had stopped. The track was drying. If Ferrari thought Softs were the tyre for the final two laps, they needed to believe either the Hards were falling off a cliff or there was time to make up 20 seconds on Piastri ahead. Neither was remotely true.

Sainz's Hard stint was the cleanest phase of his race. He averaged 89.7-second laps across 11 laps with negative degradation — the tyres were still coming in. Hamilton, on Softs from Lap 39, was managing a 14-lap stint to the flag. There was no emergency.

The real story is what Ferrari left on the table earlier. Sainz pitted for Intermediates on Lap 26 — a lap before Hamilton. He should have had track position. But Hamilton went longer on the Mediums despite worse degradation, stayed out through Lap 27, and came out of his Intermediate stop still ahead.

Then Ferrari compounded it by putting Sainz on Hards at his second stop while Hamilton took Softs. Hards, in drying conditions, with 13 laps to run. It was the conservative choice in a race that required aggression — and when that didn't work, they overcorrected with a stop that made no sense at all.

Hamilton's fastest lap came on Lap 45. Sainz's came on Lap 52 — on Softs fitted two laps earlier. He didn't need them.

Silverstone was a race Ferrari could have won with sharper calls. They had a car quick enough to challenge Mercedes in mixed conditions. Instead, they second-guessed themselves into fifth place.

Hungary is next week. The Hungaroring is a low-speed circuit where tyre strategy decides races and weather changes everything. Ferrari need to make one decision and commit to it. Sainz gave them the pace. They gave him three pit stops when two would have done.
