Everyone expects Valtteri Bottas to destroy a teammate. Ten seasons at the front with Mercedes and Alfa Romeo, 10 wins, 20 poles. Zhou Guanyu has never scored a podium and spent most of 2023 as the championship's slowest qualifier.

Bahrain just flipped that script. Violently.

The speed trace confirms it. Zhou's fastest lap came on Lap 30, Bottas's on Lap 33 — both deep into their hard stints, both running in clear air. The delta is marginal through the speed trap, but Zhou is carrying more momentum out of the slow corners. That's tyre management. That's a driver who understood the assignment in Bahrain: make the rears last, don't chase lap time early, and maximize the delta when it counts.

Bottas drove like someone who expected the car to come to him. It didn't. It went to his teammate instead.

This wasn't a fluke. Zhou finished P11 in a car that was lapped by the winner. He gained six places from his starting position. Bottas lost three and finished 19th, ahead of only Logan Sargeant.
