That's not a defense. That's just the context that makes this worse. He had the pace of a car that should've been parked, and he drove it to nineteenth because the alternative was a DNF and at least this way it looked like he tried.

Alonso scored eight points with a single pit stop. Stroll scored zero with three. Singapore is in six days, and Aston Martin better hope they figure out what went wrong here, because you can't three-stop your way through a street circuit.
