There's a lap — Lap 42, if you want to go back and watch it — where Lando Norris threads the McLaren through the castle section like he's the only driver who's ever figured out Turns 8 through 15. A full second faster than Charles Leclerc managed on his best lap. And it didn't matter at all.

Here's what the telemetry shows: Norris was nearly a second faster in Sector 2, the part of Baku where mistakes end races and confidence makes the difference. He was also eight-tenths quicker in Sector 1. The McLaren was the faster car through two-thirds of the circuit.

But Leclerc finished second. Norris finished fourth, 25 seconds back. Because Baku is the one place where having the faster car in the corners doesn't win you the race. Track position does.

That spike at Lap 37 is Norris pitting from his long hard-tyre stint. He came out 35 seconds behind Leclerc — and the race was already over.

Norris started 15th after a qualifying disaster. Leclerc started on pole. That's the entire story, really. McLaren tried to claw it back with strategy — running the hard tyre for 37 laps, banking on Norris being able to attack on fresh mediums at the end. And he was fast. Lap 42 was nearly two seconds quicker than Leclerc's average. The castle section was a demolition.

But you can't overtake through Turns 8 to 15. You overtake on the pit straight, and Norris never got close enough. He spent the final 14 laps running qualifying pace into clean air, proving what everyone already knew: the McLaren was quick. Just not where it mattered.

The radio after the chequered flag was resigned. Not angry. Norris knew by Lap 45 that he was driving to prove a point, not to change the result. The mediums gave him the pace — his lap times dropped by more than a second and a half per lap — but Ferrari had the positions locked down.

It's the Baku paradox: the fastest lap doesn't win you the race. The fastest sector doesn't move you up the order. What wins is being in front when it matters. Leclerc was. Norris wasn't.

Singapore next week is the opposite kind of street circuit. No long straight to cover mistakes. Just corners, kerbs, and walls. If McLaren bring this Sector 2 pace to Marina Bay, track position won't save anyone. Norris will want that qualifying session back. Because in Singapore, if you're faster through the tight stuff, you win the race.

Baku gave him the data. Singapore will tell us if it means anything.
