Everyone wants to talk about Norris's championship fight. But Azerbaijan qualifying exposed the one thing nobody wants to say out loud: when the margins are this tight, Piastri is the faster driver.

The numbers are brutal. Piastri's average lap time across his soft-tyre stint was 1.9 seconds faster than Norris's equivalent stint. Not a tenth here or there — nearly two full seconds. That's the kind of gap you see between a top team and a backmarker, not between teammates in identical machinery.

And before anyone reaches for the "bad luck" narrative: Norris had clean air, fresh softs, and seven laps to set a time before he stopped. Piastri had the same conditions and went nineteen laps on the same compound, setting his fastest lap on Lap 18 — eleven laps into the stint, on degraded rubber, while Norris had already been in the garage for ten minutes.

Look at the timeline. Norris stopped on Lap 5, then again on Lap 7 — two stops in three laps. That's not strategy, that's damage control. By the time he parked it, Piastri was still out there on his original set of softs, putting in consistent lap times and building toward his eventual P2.

This is Azerbaijan. The castle section is unforgiving. Track limits claimed four laps from the Ferraris and one from Russell in the first nine laps alone. Three red flags interrupted the session. This was not a day for marginal calls or pushing beyond the edge. Piastri stayed inside the white lines. Norris didn't.

One stint. Nineteen laps. No mistakes.

Piastri's softs actually got faster as the stint went on — negative degradation of 0.387 seconds per lap, meaning he was extracting more pace as he learned the grip. Norris's softs degraded at +4.7 seconds per lap, falling off a cliff before he even had a chance to build a rhythm.

That's not a tyre lottery. That's one driver managing the rubber and one driver cooking it.

This is the conversation McLaren doesn't want to have. Norris is fighting for a championship. Piastri is the number two. Except on Saturday in Baku, the hierarchy flipped, and it wasn't close.

Singapore is next — another street circuit, another qualifying session where precision matters more than raw speed. If Norris wants to close the gap to Verstappen, he needs to stop giving away Saturdays. Because Piastri just proved that the car is fast enough to qualify on the front row.

The question is whether both McLaren drivers can do it at the same time.
