One Haas driver dragged an ill-handling car into the points. The other fell backwards into the midfield chaos and stayed there.

Ten positions. That's the gap between Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg at the end of the Austrian sprint. Same car, same tyres, same strategy. One driver carved through traffic to snatch a points finish. The other slid backwards and never recovered.

This wasn't a case of mismatched luck or a badly timed safety car. Both Haas drivers started in the midfield scrum — Magnussen P11, Hulkenberg P17 — and both ran the entire race on mediums with no stops. The difference was what happened after the lights went out.

Magnussen gained two positions and finished P9. Hulkenberg lost two and finished P19. The gap between them at the flag was over 14 seconds. In a 23-lap sprint, that's not a minor difference. That's one driver getting everything out of the car and another getting overwhelmed by it.

The speed trace tells you why. Magnussen's fastest lap came on Lap 13 — nine laps deeper into the stint than Hulkenberg's best effort on Lap 4. That's not a coincidence. Hulkenberg lit up the tyres early, managed to hold station briefly, and then watched the grip fall away.

Magnussen, by contrast, played the long game. His pace degradation was half of Hulkenberg's — 0.011 seconds per lap versus 0.023 — which over 23 laps is the difference between maintaining competitive lap times and spiraling backwards into traffic you can't fight.

Look at the two blue sections (Turns 4–7 and Turns 8–10) — Magnussen carried more speed through the technical sections, which is where you defend in traffic.

Here's what this means: Hulkenberg drove the car like it was faster than it was. He attacked early, burned through his tyres, and by the midpoint of the sprint he was managing a car with no front grip and no options. Magnussen drove it like it was exactly as difficult as it actually was — and squeezed points out of it anyway.

Austria is a short, aggressive circuit where track position is everything. If you lose your tyres early, you lose your ability to defend. Hulkenberg couldn't hold his line. Magnussen could. That's the entire race right there.

So when Haas arrives at Silverstone next week, the question isn't whether both drivers will struggle with the car — they probably will. The question is whether Hulkenberg can figure out what Magnussen already knows: you can't muscle a difficult car into performing. You have to drive around the problem.

Because right now, one Haas driver is doing that. And the other isn't.
