Red Bull Gave Verstappen Three Stops and Still Lost to a Two-Stop Mercedes

The arithmetic here is brutal. Verstappen stopped on lap 23, lap 51, and lap 64. Russell stopped on lap 22 and lap 46. That's two extra pit stops for the faster car. Every stop costs roughly 20 seconds in lost track time. Red Bull gave away 40 seconds before Verstappen and Russell even made contact on lap 64.

The collision—which earned Verstappen a 10-second penalty and ended his race as a competitive proposition—was avoidable. But it was also unnecessary. Verstappen was already out of contention the moment the team called him in for a third stop with seven laps to go.

At lap 51, Verstappen led Russell by 20 seconds. He'd just completed a 28-lap stint on the hard compound. Russell was still five laps away from his own second stop. Red Bull could have left Verstappen out, extended the gap, and controlled the race to the flag on a single set of mediums.

Instead, they brought him in. Then they brought him in again 13 laps later, handing Russell a lead he had no business holding. The penalty for the collision made the final margin look like a blowout, but the damage was done long before Turn 3 on lap 64.

Russell's hard tyres ran 25 laps to the flag with no meaningful degradation. The data shows a +0.133s per lap drop-off rate—manageable, predictable, raceable. Verstappen's mediums from lap 52 to lap 64 were degrading twice as fast, but he was still faster than Russell on older rubber.

The three-stop only works if you're hunting down a car you can't otherwise catch. Red Bull had the faster car, the track position, and a 20-second cushion. They didn't need track position from fresh tyres. They needed to leave well enough alone.

At Silverstone, watch whether Red Bull can hold their nerve when the strategy is working. Austria wasn't lost on lap 64. It was lost when the pit wall decided that being fast wasn't enough—they had to be perfect. Russell won because Mercedes trusted their tyres. Red Bull didn't.
