Alonso finished 18th, a lap down, because Aston Martin brought him in for a third stop with three laps remaining.

Russell stopped twice: mediums to Lap 46, hards to the flag. Standard procedure for Austria. Alonso ran an identical strategy — mediums to Lap 35, hards to the end — until someone on the Aston Martin pit wall decided that 33 laps on the hard tyre wasn't enough.

On Lap 68, with three laps remaining and the race functionally over, Alonso pitted for soft tyres. The stop dropped him from the midfield into the pack of lapped cars. He completed two more laps before the red flag ended the race. The third stop gained him nothing. It cost him everything.

Alonso was never ahead — but he had the pace to be.

The on-track gap tells you what the pace advantage couldn't: Alonso was never in position to challenge Russell, but he was racing someone. He started 15th. He was climbing. And then the team pulled him out of the race with a stop that served no strategic purpose.

This wasn't a calculated gamble. There was no Safety Car coming. There was no fight for position that required fresh rubber. The hard tyre wasn't falling off a cliff — Russell ran his to the flag with no issues. Alonso's degradation on the hard was 0.14 seconds per lap. Manageable. Sustainable. Irrelevant, because the team didn't trust it.
