Sector 1: Verstappen faster by 0.123 seconds. Three corners, all uphill, all medium-to-high speed. Call it car advantage, call it track evolution. Either way, McLaren stayed close.

Sector 2: Verstappen faster by 0.056 seconds. Four corners, the longest sector on the lap. The gap shrank. McLaren's high-speed platform doing its work.

Three corners. Turn 8, Turn 9, Turn 10. All slow. All tight. The part of the lap where the car matters less and the driver has to deliver. Verstappen found more time in those three corners than he did in the other seven combined.

McLaren have spent the last month closing on Red Bull. The data shows it. The gap in Sector 2 — 0.056 seconds across four corners — is almost nothing. In the fast stuff, Norris had the car to match Verstappen.

But when the circuit tightened, when the corners slowed, when it came down to rotation and confidence on the limit, Verstappen found a quarter of a second. McLaren's advantage ends where precision begins.

If McLaren can't solve the final sector problem, pole position is going to stay out of reach no matter how good the car gets everywhere else.
