Magnussen Should Have Run a Two-Stop

Norris ran medium-hard and went to the end. Magnussen ran medium-hard-soft across three stints before it all fell apart.

The first decision was defensible. Magnussen started 14th, pitted on lap 12 for hards, and began carving through traffic. The degradation data shows those hards were stable — barely losing a tenth per lap. He had pace in hand. There was no reason to touch him again until lap 40 at the earliest.

Instead, Haas brought him in on lap 29 for softs. The gap chart tells you everything: Magnussen was 17 seconds behind Norris before that stop. After it, he was 60 seconds back. The stop itself didn't lose 40 seconds — the decision to stop did, because it dropped him into traffic he'd already cleared.

Then it got worse. Magnussen pitted again on lap 30 — one lap after the previous stop. Whatever issue triggered that double-stack cost him 100 seconds. By lap 31, he was racing Tsunoda and Zhou for 12th, a full minute behind cars he'd been faster than all day.

The soft tyres? They were fine. The degradation curve shows they held up through lap 57. Magnussen set his fastest lap on the final tour. The car was quick. The strategy was a disaster.

Norris, meanwhile, ran the simplest race imaginable: one stop, medium to hard, managed the gap. His hards were effectively neutral on degradation — flat across 32 laps. He didn't need to be faster than Magnussen. He just needed to not pit four times.

Haas had the car to challenge for a top-six finish. They left Abu Dhabi with one point from Hulkenberg and a lap-down result from their faster driver. Someone on that pit wall panicked. The data shows Magnussen had the pace to make a two-stop work. He never got the chance to prove it.
